FAQ's

What is the Difference Between an Independent Celebrant and a Humanist Celebrant? Both Independent Celebrants and Humanist Celebrants create meaningful, personalised ceremonies that celebrate life's most important moments. The key difference lies in the flexibility of the ceremony they can offer. An Independent Celebrant creates a completely bespoke ceremony, giving you the freedom to include whatever feels right for you. Whether you would like your ceremony to be entirely non-religious, include prayers, blessings, spiritual readings, cultural traditions, symbolic rituals, or a combination of different beliefs and backgrounds, an Independent Celebrant can weave these elements together into a ceremony that truly reflects you, your values, and your story. A Humanist Celebrant by contrast, conducts ceremonies that are entirely non-religious. Humanist ceremonies celebrate love, life, and commitment from a secular perspective and do not include religious or spiritual content. Both types of celebrant are passionate about creating unique, heartfelt ceremonies. However, as an Independent Celebrant, I offer complete creative freedom. There are no templates, no restrictions, and no limitations on the elements we can include. Together, we can create a beautifully crafted ceremony that reflects your personalities, honours your beliefs, and tells your story in a way that feels authentic, memorable, and entirely your own.

What is the difference between an Independent Celebrant and a Registrar? A Registrar is employed by the local authority to conduct the legal marriage ceremony. Their ceremonies must follow strict legal guidelines regarding wording and content, which means there is limited opportunity for personalisation. As an Independent Celebrant, I have complete creative freedom to design a ceremony that is entirely about you. Every ceremony I write is bespoke, telling your story with warmth, personality and authenticity. You can include personal vows, family traditions, cultural elements, symbolic rituals, music, readings, laughter, emotion and, if you wish, religious or spiritual content. Many of my couples choose to complete the legal paperwork separately at their local Register Office before enjoying a truly unforgettable celebrant-led wedding ceremony with all of their family and friends.

Do you work with the LGBTQ+ community? Without question. Love is love, and everyone deserves a ceremony that celebrates who they are and the life they are building together. I create inclusive ceremonies for couples of all genders, sexual orientations, cultures and backgrounds. Every ceremony is written with kindness, respect and individuality, ensuring it reflects your relationship and your journey together.

Will you create interfaith ceremonies? Yes, and I absolutely love creating them. Interfaith ceremonies are a wonderful opportunity to honour both families, cultures and traditions in a way that feels authentic and inclusive. Whether you're blending different religions, cultures or beliefs, I work closely with you to create a ceremony that respectfully celebrates both of your backgrounds while reflecting the life you are creating together.

Can we include our faith and beliefs in the ceremony? Absolutely. One of the greatest benefits of choosing an Independent Celebrant is the freedom to include whatever is meaningful to you. Whether that's prayers, blessings, hymns, spiritual readings, symbolic rituals, cultural traditions or simply a quiet moment of reflection, your ceremony should feel like a true reflection of your values and beliefs. Equally, if you prefer a completely non-religious ceremony, that's wonderful too. Every ceremony is created entirely around you.

Can we involve our children in our ceremony? Yes, and it is often one of the most emotional parts of the day. Whether you're bringing two families together or celebrating with children you've welcomed into your lives, there are so many beautiful ways to include them. They might take part in a family unity ceremony, a sand blending, ring warming, handfasting, candle ceremony, reading, or even make their own promises as part of your family celebration. Together we'll create moments that your children will treasure forever.
